PPTP and L2TP are   two important protocols of VPN. An Android device VPN client allows you to establish 5 different types of VPN using different protocols including PPTP and L2TP.  Many Smartphone and Tablet users are perplexed due to the wide variety of choices available in VPN. PPTP and L2TP are both good VPN protocols. However, they do have individual characteristics that score over each other.

PPTP establishes the tunnel for secured transmission of data but does not provide encryption. The encryption is provided by Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption. PPTP uses different types of authentications such as PAP, SPAP, CHAP, MS-CHAP v.1/v.2 and EAP.  L2TP on the other hand is more similar to PPTP. Like PPTP, the L2TP protocol does not provide encryption   by itself. It greatly depends on the encryption protocol that is passed during tunneling.

PPTP uses 128-bit encryption while L2TP uses stronger up to 256-bit encryption.  The data encryption in PPTP begins after PPP process while in L2TP it begins before PPP process. In simple words, L2TP VPN is more secure than PPTP VPN.
