Steps to set up PPTP VPN connection in Windows XP

Note: It is assumed you already have a Wi-Fi Internet Connection set in Windows XP before proceeding with the steps. If not, set up a Wi-Fi Internet connection before proceeding.

  • Click on Start button in the Task bar.
  • Go to Settings ->Control Panel
  • Click on “Classic View”
  • Go to “Network Connections”.
  • Under the Network Tasks, click on “Create a New Connection” (A Welcome to New Connection Wizard window pops up.)
  • Click on Next
  • Select “Connect to the network at my workplace”, click on Next
  • Select “Virtual Private Connection”, click on Next.
  • In the next screen, type the Company Name (for example, click on Next.
  • In The Public Network screen, select “Do not dial initial connection”, click on Next.
  • In the VPN Server Selection,  type in the Host Name or IP address, click on Next( Note: the IP address is  provided by the VPN service provider)

Next, we need to set Connection Settings

  • Enter the Username and Password in the respective fields.
  • Click on Properties
  • Click on the Networking tab
  • In Type of VPN, select PPTP VPN from drop down list.
  • Close the window, click on Connect.
